As the European Parliament prepares for the confirmation hearings of the new Commissioners, the Open Trade Coalition is reiterating its call for a bold and open EU trade policy. First launched in July, the Coalition has grown into a group of 43 business associations, all of them united by the shared idea that trade openness is a key driver to keep the EU competitive, prosperous, and resilient in the face of global challenges. According to the Coalition, trade openness must therefore become a top priority and veritable leitmotiv for the EU over the next five years.

The undersigned members of the Technical Secretariat of the PEFCR on Apparel & Footwear hereby voice their concerns to their peers and to the European Commission regarding the dysfunctions that the currently adopted procedure for the calculation of the “Duration of Service” of products provokes. The “How long?” of the functional unit is meant to establish the length of time that apparel and footwear articles in the scope of the PEFCR remain in service. Time is a crucial factor for the calculation of the environmental footprint of products, as the longer a product remains in service, the lower will be its environmental impact.

On the 11th and 12th of September, Vilnius became the hub of innovation and collaboration for Europe’s textile, clothing, leather, and footwear (TCLF) industries. Representatives from 19 public and private organisations across eight countries — Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Finland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Serbia, and Slovenia — gathered to advance the game-changing Erasmus+ Blueprint AEQUALIS4TCLF project. This initiative is at the forefront of equipping Europe’s TCLF workforce with the vital skills needed to navigate the digital and green transitions that are reshaping the global economy.
